Have you heard or used these phrases before? “At the end of the day…” or “When all is said and done…”
These phrases are commonly used when the speaker wants to finish a conversation by expressing what they think is most important to focus on.Β
Examples:
I might say this to my friend who is working so hard that they are starting to have health problems. “I see how hard you are working to provide for yourself and your family. It is a good thing to put in effort and work hard, butΒ at the end of the day, your health is more important than money. You need to take some time to rest and not just work all the time.”Β
A group of friends is planning a trip together, and everyone has different opinions on where to go and what to do. After a few hours of talking and not agreeing on a final plan, one of the friends says, “Honestly, I don’t care where we go or what we do, because when all is said and done, we’ll be together, having fun and making memories. And that’s all that really matters to me.”
These two phrases have almost the same meaning and can usually be used interchangeably.
